Last year I put together a list of Top 8 Artists of 2010. This year’s list recognizes photographers. Some are some of the nicest people on earth, with impeccable skills with a body of work that rivals any paintings. What makes these photographers special is their dedication to their craft, the passion that comes out in their work, and how they are eternally curious, which leads to always challenging themselves to be better. Enjoy!

Scott Kelby

I first got introduced to his work because of his books. He writes the best books on photography in the world. His books are easy to read/understand and of course informative. They’re also kinda funny. He’s also a heck of a photographer.

Thomas Hawk

I like his work because of how he’s able to make everyday things interesting.

Trey Ratcliff

I first got into Trey’s work because I wanted to learn how to take HDR (high dynamic range) images. If HDR is what interests you, his website is where you start. Period. But I “stuck” with him because he’s a wicked nice guy, which a diverse set of interests that goes way beyond photography.

There are many others whose work I like, but I may have left them out because they are into more business than art. But it’s great to be in a time with so many great photographers to follow and learn from, don’t you think?

I like Degas. He’s not one of my favorites painters, but he’s up there. So when Bank of America decided to pay for my ticket, I went to check out the Degas and the Nude exhibition at the MFA today. Since it was Sunday and BoA paid for others also, there was a lot of people in the museum. Many of them listening to audio tours on their headphones. Quick side-note about the audio tours: not a big fan — it’s too much like having someone read you a history text-book. I prefer it when someone knowledgeable and passionate the artist’s work talks about the painting live (thankfully, the MFA has these people too). Someone I can ask my questions that’s been troubling me and my generation.

Now, back to the exhibit… here’s my issue: It was full of a lot of sketches by Degas. To be a little more specific, there were a lot of sketches and studies. A “study” is the term used for a practice piece, a quick drawing or painting done to capture the essence of a subject or scene, and not a painting done as a final piece. A study is more refined or finished than a sketch.

Some of the sketches were quite nice, but without the Degas signature I doubt MFA would be able to get more than 50 people into the exhibition. The sketches show experimentation and mistakes. Not the kind of work we’re used to seeing by Degas. To put it in other words, I felt like I saw the wizard behind the curtain in Wizard of Oz. Not a good feeling. I think I would’ve preferred to remember him as this infallible artist who only created perfect art every time his pastels touched paper.
