Happy birthday, Voltage! How quickly you’ve grown up. For those unfamiliar with Voltage Coffee and Art, here are the critical details: good coffee, good people, good food, good music, but most importantly good art. I know them because Artist Trekker had an exhibition there. Since then, I’ve been hooked. The thing that attracted me to them is unlike other coffee shops, art is not an afterthought here. The space was created with showcasing art in mind. And showcase they do. Since its opening, they’ve had a wide assortments of extremely talented local artists share their work there. Some I like, as in if I had the money I would buy the painting on the spot. Some weren’t really my thing. Regardless of my personal taste, the art is always thought-provoking and well presented. These guys know and care about art, and it shows.
They’re having a show today at 7pm titled “Anonymous” – Shadow, Dance, and Music that I’ll try to make.
I try to attend all their exhibitions. The current exhibition is by the artist Christina Watka. I couldn’t make it to her opening reception at Voltage (which is usually a lot of fun), but finally got a chance to drop by yesterday. I took some pictures (click on the thumbnails below), but I have to warn you, the photos don’t do the installment justice. The intricate details of her work is impressive. I can’t fathom the godlike calm and attention to details one needs to create her magical pieces. Components of her works by themselves are elegant, but it’s when you aggregate them, they create an atmosphere totally unique for the space. Kinda like being in a coffee-house in Kendall, but having the feeling of standing in a forest looking through the trees. In other words, having your own teleportation device.

I am so excited about your images of the show. They are simple, evocative, and striking! I am so glad you enjoyed the space…everything you mentioned about the pieces were definitely intentional. This post just made my day!
